Stanislav Bardakh, a national coach of Ukraine, came to the United States in 1979. His dream was to do something great for fencing in his new country. He soon founded Salle Bardakh, which produced All-Americas and National champions, and in 1983, he partnered with fencing enthusiast Steve Khinoy to establish BLADE Fencing Equipment. It started on Manhattan’s West 71st Street in a tiny office but big dreams. And it grew quickly.
BLADE’s mission: the fullest range of fencing equipment at the most affordable prices in each range. BLADE was the first to import blades made of the excellent Russian and Ukrainian steel. BLADE supplied these to its customers and distributed them to vendors all over the US. Later, after Chinese production had improved sufficiently, BLADE was the first to import from China, a move which other suppliers were quick to follow. Of course, BLADE was also importing top-of-the-line goods from Italy, France, and Germany.
As it grew. BLADE established an international presence, supplying individuals, clubs, and national federations to 65 countries around the world—including USA Fencing (or the U.S. Fencing Association, as it was called then). Its tradition of excellence was established, and Stan’s dream was fulfilled.
Stan Bardakh is retired now, but his dream continues. New blood is giving BLADE a fresh start and a new direction. The tradition of affordable excellence continues.
